Stanton played as a defender/midfielder for Hibs from 1963-1976 and captained them when they won the 1972 Scottish League Cup Final. He played for Celtic from 1976-1978 and helped them win the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Championship in 1976-77 season before a bad injury finished his career. Stanton was capped 16 times for Scotland.
