Rutherford is a best known as a guitarist and backing vocalist in English rock band Genesis. He wrote some of the band's biggest hits including Land of Confusion, Follow You Follow Me and Turn It On Again. In addition to his work with Genesis he released two solo albums in the early 1980's and in 1985 he formed the successful band Mike + The Mechanics.
