Leighton played as a goalkeeper for Aberdeen from 1977-1988 and again from 1997-2000 after spells at Manchester United, Dundee and Hibernian. He was part of the team that won the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup final against Real Madrid. Leighton was capped 91 times for Scotland.
