Stein played as a centre forward for Hibernian, Rangers, Coventry City and Kilmarnock. He was a member of the Rangers team that won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, scoring the opening goal in Rangers 3-2 victory against Dynamo Moscow. He was capped 21 times for Scotland.
